BIOGRAPHY

Devon Beck, also known as “Beck” when it comes to his music career; was born on the East Coast on November 9, 1981. He was raised in Denton, Maryland but then relocated to attend his college of choice, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The music bug was always with him from a young age. He constantly demanded attention from whoever came in contact with him- constantly performing, making the world his stage. While attending college, Beck decided to put all his energy on graduating with a BA degree in English/Communications; then to focus entirely on his hip hop career. A lot of people supported this decision and kept him focused on his dream, from his fraternity brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. to his good friend, Cuzzy who also produces a lot of his current work. Unlike the stereotypical hip hop artists, Beck came from an all American black family- not from the “hardcore streets”. His musical inspiration has always come from his daily life lessons, his struggle to reach success in the industry, his drive to help and inspire other young people and also from various artists that have contributed to the evolution of hip hop. Such artists that influence his work are Jay Z, Nas, AZ, Kanye West, Michael Jackson, Big Sean, Shawn Combs, Chris Wallace, Tupac, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, Currency, Jay Electronica, Jay Cole, Drake, Camp Lo, Stalley, Big K.R.I.T. and many more. His “flow” is very unique- it’s definitely hip hop with a raspy poetic feel but it definitely progresses in intensity depending on his message.

Beck is currently working hard to release his second album (independent), “Beck to the Future”, Tunnel Vision (mix tape), and an Untitled album. He’s been in the studio (Sussex Media Studios, Laurel DE) for some time now and is so anxious to promote these projects. The album will be released on CD as well as digitally in the near future. Beck is also preparing several promotional activities such as a Preview Concert, club appearances, and much more. His latest work has been with Soul World Entertainment. Beck and SWE are in the studio aggressively with a goal of creating 30 songs to shop to major labels. Beck has described his experience with SWE as inspiring. Being in the studio with the most talented & creative staff and quality equipment makes him feel at home. This is where he creates genius material and an abundance of it; he writes, records, masters, etc several songs within hours. SWE was successful in getting Devon Beck to open for major artists like Big Sean, Wale, Meek Millz, Marsha Ambrious, Travis Porter during an HBCU Homecoming tour. He's opened up for these headliners at Bowie State University, Lincoln University, and next up is Shaw University. Consistently improving his craft, Beck continuously works on his music- whether it’s writing new material, working hard in the studio, performing live on stage, or delivering motivational speeches to reach out to the youth- Beck is doing it all! His goal is make music his life long career, create good music, and inspire others.

Beck perfected his craft during his college years by performing live concerts on campus and became quite the local celebrity. Along with his partner, Cuzzy the two released several mix tapes that circulated the campus. Once his work was out there he formed, First String Records with another partner, Shelton Hawkins. The crew, which consisted of Beck, Shelton Hawkins, Banks, Lil Rizz, and Blake, released two mix tapes, “First String Records Vol. 1”, and “Vol. 2: State Champs”. Beck also released his debut album; “Beck is da Future” in 2007 which was sold locally. He promoted this album by performing live at clubs such as Cada Vez in Washington DC, the local Summerfest, and at colleges in the area. Soon after, Beck was given the opportunity to work with a DC based band and released another album, the Francis Coates Project along with sensational singer, Kyonte'. The band went on tour and performed at several clubs such as Bohemian Caverns and Blues Alley; several colleges such as Towson University, Howard University and the University of Maryland- Baltimore County; the Af’Ram Festival, and more. Working with this band he also established some lasting connections such as having the opportunity to record at Chucky Thompson’s (known for working with Biggie) studio in Warldorf, MD. Beck has also made appearances on other local artist’s projects such as Cuzzy (NY), Kyonte' (DC), MQuest, SB (MD), Anonymous, Shi Nitty, Wicked Born, and Doc Holiday. Beck‘s goal is to be known and make a positive impression because he is in this for the long haul. “No corner offices, I’m trying own the building so when I die I can leave my business to my children. Welcome your CEO, no I ain’t the first to do it, oversee the whole shit then throw a verse into it…” -Beck.

There are countless amounts of talented of people in the world but only a select few have the drive and commitment to take it to the next level. Beck’s work ethic sets him apart from those select few and he proves time and time again he has what it takes to make it in the industry. Kyonte, a musician from Washington DC states,

“Beck is my favorite lyricist- he has that “it quality” that won’t just produce a one hit wonder; he will have longevity in this field making hit after hit- he’s definitely an investment.”

Shelton Hawkins who was a part of First String Records and is currently an aspiring clothing designer says,

“Out of all the local artists Beck stands out because he has style, personality, good work ethic, and crazy rhymes!”

Support like this gives Beck so much drive to make his mark in the industry and to continue to strive to do hip hop like it’s never been done before!
